Go Wranglers! I haven't even thought of that in years! But, I have always thought of camp as RRR. I started out in Western Empress and moved on from there. It has brought tears to my eyes to see and read all the pictures and memories from those years. Suni Becker as Heuy Lewis and Kate Donaho as my little sister. I made more mistakes and got more love from them at RRR.Sandy and Skeet are people I wish I could be when I grow up! Thanks for still being around!
Shana McLarry | Camp years: 1982-88

I had the wonderful experience of being a counselor at RRR in '60, '61 '66 and '67. Those first 2 years I knew and loved both Mama Knolk and Jane. Later, I was there with Skeet and Sandy. I have great memories of all those special people and all the fun times at camp. I'm so glad the camp is still going strong!
Thanks for this website and all the pictures!

I went camp if I can remember between 1974-1978. My cousin Megan Mickelson got my sister and I to go to camp. (Trilby Babin.) I wish I had not missed the reunion Megan told me about. A few years back I was at a party and how we got to talking about camp I don't remember. We all got started singing the fight songs of the Cowpokes and Wranglers. It was such fun remembering all the great times we had. I will never forget the mud fight I had after we had a flood and the river went down. We did end up backing the drain up in the Bar K cabin rising off. I'm not sure who it was that was in the fight. I've visited one time and it was a while back. I hope to come up again.
Blythe Babin Fiedler | Camp years: 1974-78

I'm so sorry that I can not make the reunion this time. RRR will always have a special place in my heart. I learned so much in my years spent at camp. Thanks to Sunni Becker for being a great "synchro" instructor- I will never forget my legs burning from holding that towel above my head for 5 minutes!!! Riding in the rodeo for the 4th of July was also a great experience. Thanks for everything!
Karina Adams Cascadden | Camp years: 1981-90

My years at Rocky River were some of the most wonderful times in my life. My sister (Laura) and I still spend hours talking about our fun times there. We still remember our days of swimming in the river, riding horses and water skiing. I can't wait until my little girl can experience all the joy and fun I had as a child for herself. Can't wait to catch up with all of you in September. See you soon. GO COWPOKES!!!!!!!
Debbie Merian Polasek | Camp years: 1976-87

Where's my crew from the 70's? I loved my RRR experiences so much that I moved to Arizona to live on an Indian reservation, so I could have year-round "camping"...(you know, archery, horseback riding, campfires, away from big city traffic.) RRR definately affects who you become!
Sue Caulton | Camp years: 1969-73

Picture a Spot...My years at Rocky River mean more to me than can be written down in a little note...There's probably not a day that goes by that I don't think about an experience, a laugh, a friendship, a struggle, a success, etc. that I experienced at camp. There's something about the Spring that makes me want to "throw in the towel" of the corporate world and go back to RRR every Summer. GO WRANGLERS!!!! "W"!!! I love that I can go back and find the same "safe haven" that I experienced from a 7 year old in Circle B down to several years as a Counselor! Driving across that cattle guard at the front gate, my heart beat calms to a familiar and comforting beat again, like nothing else I've experienced. Keep the traditions ALIVE, and I hope to see everyone in September!!!
Erin Davis | Camp years: 19 85-98

So many of my grandest childhood memories lie in the hills and trails of RRR. A city kid in a single parent home, who'd never have learned how to sail, canoe, waterski, swim synchronized or ID all the parts of the horse had it not been for summers @ RRR. Several times each year, I am reminded of RRR's heartfelt connection within me, when I hear a song or reference to the movies: Sound of Music, Man of LaMancha, or Fiddler on the Roof (Watershow Themes). When I visit my brother in SanAntonio, its been fun to re-visit Aquarina Springs and Canyon Lake.
I've enjoyed the website, and will try to attend the reunion in Sept if I can arrange it. Go Cowpokes!!!
Kim Coll Blanton | Camp years: 1971-77

Oh how I wish I could still be a young girl and go to RRR every summer! I truly miss those wonderful weeks of absolute fun and excitement. This camp holds a very special place in my heart and will always throughout my life. I can not wait until the day that my newborn little girl will be able to drive through the gate and live the summer days that not only her mother lived, but her grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother enjoyed. I can not wait until the day that I can tell her all about that special great-great-grandmother, GG, (Carol Knolk or Mama Knolk as many of you know her) that opened this beautiful Rocky River Ranch and created a place for many girls and boys to create memories from. I am truly happy to see Mama Knolk's spirit still living on. May it continue to live on the dream that she always wanted. I can't wait to see everybody in September! Go Cowpokes!
Allison Turley Torres, '86-'94

My years at Rocky River made me the person I am today (Emily Davenport would question whether this is actually a good thing). I love the fact that generations of girls (and boys) are still being shaped by the place. Looking through this website, my head is filled with camp songs...
Kate Donaho | Camp years: 1982-91

It seems like every summer I think about Rocky River more and more. I often wish I could go back and be a camper or counselor again. Rocky River was the highlight of the year while growing up. Every summer I could not wait to get out my trunk and start packing, usually several weeks early. I would pack and repack it several times before time to leave. I have many fond memories of my summers at RRR beginning in the wagons when I was seven years old and then every year until I had spent a few years as a counselor (in the red wagon). Now I sing camp songs to my kids every morning and think about camp almost every day. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to go and I have been looking for a boys camp for my son and none of them compare to RRR (bring boys camp back!). I still get tears when I even think the song "Picture a Spot." I miss Sandy and Skeet, Arthur, my camp friends, and all of RRR. See you at the Reunion...Go Wranglers!
Patti Scott Gillman | Camp years: 1972-85

My twin sister and I came to RRR right after it was created. What fun! That was such a treat for us and our first time away from home. We send our 3 granddaughters every year and they love it as much as I did. I now live in Wimberley and it is as great today as it was in the '50's. Thanks so much for making it so special, then and now.
Lee Baker Gibson | Camp year: 1954

We still can't believe it has been 50 years since my mother, Mama Knolk, started RRR. We are so proud that it is still the same as she built it and still has the same spirit upon which it was founded. Our children and grand children have had the wonderful opportunity to attend camp and we all can still sing some of the songs when we get together. May the spirit of Mama Knolk stay with all that have attended RRR.
Polly Knolk Denham | Camp years: 1953-60s

Moma Knolk - what a wonderful and gentle lady. She always wanted the best for us and for us to be our best.
Jeanette Brian Lawrence | Camp years: 1960s

I was so lucky to have found RRR through YMCA's Indian Princess program with my dad. I couldn't wait until my mom finally decided I was old enough to go for the summer, instead of a weekend retreat with Dad! I have so many wonderful memories of RRR and started singing camp songs to my son to put him to sleep when he was born. We still sing them every night and he just turned 5. We still come to Wimberley every year and stay at some cabins we found there. It's such a beautiful place. "Where Heaven and the Hill Hold Hands."
Go Wranglers!!!!!
Terri Hiserodt Cagle | Camp years: 1977-85

My summers at RRR were the most special times of my childhood. I have so many great memories that I'll never forget. Thanks to Rocky River, I found my true calling in life... children! And, I fell in love with Wimberley so much, that I live here now!!
The torch has been passed on to my niece (who thankfully, is a Wrangler!) and will eventually be passed on to my daughter. I miss everyone so much, and hope to attend one of the reunion's soon.
Mollie Cessac Booth | Camp years: 1979-91, 1999-2000

GO COWPOKES !!!!!! We are here and we are still competitive!
I have tried several times to get back in the Alumni group. Family still takes over most of the time. My memories of RRR are like it was yesterday. My most remembered memories are with the drill team. Well, we practiced all the time and spent most of our time at the barn. I have many pictures I would like to share. I remember the first year Arthur started working at RRR. I love to visit and walk up behind him and say guess who? He still remembers my voice???@@@@?@@@@!!!!! He would say CIIIINNNNDDDDDY! It just makes me feel like a camper again.
My daughters have been there and my youngest is still attending. She talks to her friends about RRR just as much as I did growing up.
Cynthia Lassiter Smith | Camp years: 1970s

I looked at a picture sitting on my desk today of my sister Becky and I with Sandy. Seems like just yesterday and I love to go back and visit those memories. Actually, come to think of it I spend a lot of time at the river. I would not be the person I have become today if it were not for Skeet and Sandy. One of the biggest lessons I ever learned in life was from Sandy. I fell off a horse and Sandy made me get right back on. I had no idea what impact that lesson would mean to my life but I have to say it has become one of the most valuable.
Beth Boykin Huddle | Camp years: 1976-80

I absolutely adored my 2-3 weeks at camp every summer! RRR enriched my life in so many ways!! GO COWPOKES! I miss not being 13 and going away from boys for 2 weeks and having the time of my life. I hope I can come to RRR's 100th!
Catherine Boone | Camp years: 1994-2001

Wow, what memories. I can only hope my daughters will have the same experience. I loved it all! The girls, the swimming, the horses (Rocky was my favorite). Rocky River had such an important part of my life! I miss everyone. Rhonda, Kat, Cheryl (Tree), Noel (Bush), Debbie, Stephanie (Squish) Kate, Shelly, Emily, I could go on forever! I hope everyone knows what a special place it is!!!
Sunni Becker Markowitz | Camp years: 1972-88

Rocky River Ranch is an important memory in my life. I will never forget it. I sent my older daughter there 3 years ago and she loved it! She was only 6 at the time. I gave her my silver RRR ring that I bought when I was her age and she now has it on her charm bracelet. Memories last a lifetime!
Donna Rhame Joe | Camp years: 1979-83

I honestly believe that I wouldn’t be the same person if not for my many years at Rocky River. I hold so tightly to the lessons and memories I made there — they are forever and immeasurable.
Alyson Stringer Steakley | Camp years: camper 1982-89, counselor 1993

RRR is a magical place where time stands still and dreams come true. The experiences and memories that my sister, Fifi, and I share with each other and with our children are a special gift! Thank you Mama Knolk and Jane, Sandy, Skeet and Rue!
Lise Berger Chumbley | Camp years: camper 1960 -67, counselor and horseback director 1968-99 with a year off now and then

Rocky River Ranch is like a second family to me. No matter where I go or what I do, a piece of RRR is with me. All of my family has gone to Rocky River and it’s loving effect is everlasting upon us all.
Leah Hohle | Camp years: camper 1986, counselor 2002

WOW....What an experience!!! Those were the best times in my life. Being a camper, cit, jr. counselor and counselor. Hearing Rhonda play her trumpet to wake us up in the morning, late night raids on the kitchen, putting someone's underwear up the flagpole. Those were the days!!!
Lezli Giancarlo | Camp years: 1982-90

From the summer of 1973 until my last summer, 1983, I LIVED for the time I spent at Rocky River. Now my daughter, who will be 8 next year (the same age I was my first summer), is already planning her first week as a camper. It is a special place that will always be a big part of my life.
Kimberley VonDerAu Miller, | Camp years: 1973-83

I'm sure there are so many things that I have forgotten, but camp will always represent the very best of my growing-up years. I think that’s why I loved camp so much — I was always encouraged to grow my imagination and excel as an individual, and yet, learned how to socialize all at the same time.
Britany Beavers Just | Camp years: camper 1980-83, 1986, counselor 1989, niece of founder Jane Brown

Oh my gosh! I miss RRR sooo much especially during the summer and its been almost 10 years since I was there! My summers at RRR were the best and I made some great friends. I have such great memories of the singing contest, cowpoke-wrangler games, campfires, and of course the big final show! I miss free swim and making homemade ice cream and walking up that huge hill from the swimming pool and my horse Flame and waiting for the dinner bell and winning trips to little Arkansas or Blue River and being the carepackage queen! haha we had lots of yummy food in my cabin! :) I still find myself singing lots of the songs we'd sing at meal times..I ca'nt hear the word Wimberley without breaking into "Wimberley, Wimberley in the heart of the hill country, Wimberley, Wimberley is where I want to be"...such good times! Rocky River Ranch has a special place in my heart and always will. GO WRANGLERS!!!!!!
Lauren Novelli | Camp years: 1993-96

Hello to everyone at Rocky River. Now that my children are of camp age, it makes me think of the fun times I had at Rocky River. I went there around 1976-78. And one year I even took my horse, which was really fun. I remember one of my counselors named Audrey, who let us sneak into the mess hall after hours and "borrow" some ice cream. There is a lot of fun to be had at Rocky River. Have a great summer.
Donna Crabbe Swain | Camp years: 1976-78

I have very fond memories of Rocky River Ranch. I attended about three summers in the early 1970s. I had many "favorite things," but I guess the best were the synchronized swimming and horseback riding.I still remember the movie that was playing at the outdoor theatre the first year...Thoroughly Modern Milly. I remember a good friend/cabinmate named Kim and we had kept in touch for several years, but then gradually lost touch once we finished high school. If you see this Kim, I would love to hear from you! Go Cowpokes!
Candace McGee Bowdoin | Camp years: early 1970s

I was a Wrangler back in the 70s-lived in Circle B and Sunni Becker was my bunkmate! I remember because I was impressed that her dad new Evel Knievel. Zella from West U in Houston was also a bunkmate. I grew up in Sugar Land and my sister, Rene' White and her best friend, Annette Bennett, also went to Rocky River. I loved the horses and the midnight ice cream! I have lived on the east coast for years, with my husband and son after living in LA and Europe but always remember Wimberly.
Kimberly White Erlinger, '74, '76

The memories are all flooding back! I still get the feeling of butterflies in my stomach (from excitement) when I think about crossing the cattle guard on the first day of camp! I can see so many faces in my mind and I even remember a few names...Hara, Liz, Rhonda....I hope everyone is well! I remember the talent shows (oh the talent), the trips to Blue Hole, the dining hall songs, the canteen, the horse shows, and especially the moonlight campfires. And I can't forget swinging on Skeet and Sandy's porch swing and talking with friends for hours into the night. By the way, I still like to test out my synchronized swimming moves every now and then! Thank you RRR for the wonderful memories!
GO COWPOKES!!!!!
Rachel Scott McCormick | Camp years: 1985-?

I was a camper the summers of 1979 and 1980. The RRR was my favorite camping experience, and I treasure the memories even today... Little sisters, cooling off in the gentle rapids of the creek, horseback riding, water shows, practicing my spanish, trooping down to the theater under the stars. The list goes on, I remember the air traffic controller strike happening at the end of girls camp, and being so excited that I might have to stay for boys camp too! (never happened, back to NJ)

Attending RRR is a tradition in my family. Aunts, cousins, sisters, and best friends all have great memories that we still talk about today. I am waiting for the summer that my daughter is old enough to attend and experience the same wonderful times that I had. My memories of summers at RRR are so special to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you Skeet & Sandy and all of the staff from every session, for the 10 years of summertime, childhood bliss!
Melissa Ross Crispin | Camp years: 1984-94

WOW~! I am SO excited to have this opportunity to see and talk to so many of my camp friends. That was such a special time in my life. When people ask if there is something I could do again from childhood what would it be....there is absolutely NO DOUBT it is my time at camp!! My most fond memories are getting there, leaving, and everything in between,,,,LOL.... I loved the water and horseshows that we did every 2 weeks, winning inspection THREE TIMES and going to Blue Hole, evening activities, campfires, and songs. BUT the BEST part of camp were the friends that I made. I was usually with Sunni Becker, Cheryl Chaney, Kathy White, Regina Hartwell, or Kate Butler. We had soooo much fun together! Finally, Wrangler or Cowpoke,,,,CIT's of 83 RULE!!!!!!!! Hope to hear from MANY of my old friends and make some new ones! See you at the reunion!
Sandy Harris Copeland | Camp years: 1977-86

It's true. Wrangler's Rule! You know how some (most) memories fade over time? What is it about those camp memories that they stay so crystal clear? I think that when I'm old and gray (older and grayer), that they will still be as if they just happened yesterday. REMEMBER WHEN??? Remember when we picked up Kathie Newberry's car and moved it to a different location? Remember when Rue lived in the CL? Remember how Louisa never had a voice (and could do anything in synchro - and nearly drowned us by the way)? Remember when Sandy would stand up and sing that beautiful song that would bring tears to all our eyes? Remember when Priscilla would act like a goof-ball at evening programs and make us laugh until we were crying? Remember how we used to have to sing for our lost and found? (I STILL freak out if I leave anything anywhere!!!) Remember when you found a great friend to sit and talk for hours and hours ...to contemplate life ...what we would become ... and our futures??? Remember how peaceful it was at chapel on Sunday mornings? They are crystal clear for me! I hope to see some of you at the reunion in September!!!
Debbie Harris-Barrett | Camp years: 1977-81

Let me just start off by saying WRANGLERS RULE!!! Anyway, I will never forget my first year at RRR. I was at a two week session and kept having these horrible asthma problems and my mom really wanted me to come home, but I wouldn't go! I was having way too much fun and always did every year I was there, circle B through counselor. I miss RRR so much! I really wish I could come to the reunion, but I will be far far away in Lubbock. Darn college. However, I will try my hardest to visit before I leave. It was great to hear from you guys and I hope to see yall soon!
Erin Watkins | Camp years: 1993-2001

I am so glad to see that I am not the only one who loves this camp insanely. By the way, it is also gratifying to see WRANGLERS ROCKIN THE GUESTBOOK!!!!!!!!!! It is with great sorrow that I have learned my child will be forced into the cowpoke camp. Do they understand this could cause serious rifts in the family structure? I was the annoying little kid that howled at the moon...my kids and I still do. I will definitely be there in September. I remember a Rebecca that wore braids all the time, and I remember a girl named Lisa who had a great tan, and I remember Rhonda. I still love that song, "Help me Rhonda". I wish Cookie would come cook for me again, and someday I WILL own a white German shepherd. Arthur's smile is still vivid. AND, I was completely shocked at how small our camp really is, when you are a grown up. I thought it was thousands of miles. I ate my first chocolate chip ice cream on Skeet and Sandy's porch with Momma Knolk. Circle B rocked. I still love Daddy Long Legs. I would go through teen years again to be a camper at RRR once more. Love you guys. "Over hill, over dale, as we hit the woodland trail, as the wranglers go marching along...in or out, sun or set, WE WILL BEAT THE COWPOKES yet...as the Wranglers go riding along...for it's hi hi hee, the best in camp are we, striving with all our might to win...and we'll win yet...if we can only get, Wrangler spirit that never will die." It ain't dead yet. :)
Carrie Holly McMahan | Camp years: 1976-?

I had the best time at Camp from being a little kiddo to a camp councelor. The memories will last a lifetime. I sing "Green Trees around us" to my son all the time. WRANGLERS RULE!
Rebecca Chasis Nixon | Camp years: 1976-90

I would love to get in touch with others I went to camp with. I think of camp more and more as summer approaches. I would love to hear from you. I look forward to seeing old friends at the reunion in September.
Hara Chasis Cootes | Camp years: at camp 14 years

Some of us could never bring ourselves to completely separate from Rocky River. Still crazy after all these years! Let us hear from you....
Kay Neubrand Wolverton | Camp years: 1966-74

The two summers I spent as the camp sports director and counselor of circle B up are memories that I will always cherish. Now ten years later, I still enjoy telling my friends about the fun times I had with the campers and counselors. RRR was as much fun for me as it was for the campers. Being looked up to by 7 to 12 year olds also taught me the responsibility that comes with being a role model.
I still have my "PACO" bracelet that my campers made for me (I still don't know how that nickname stuck for two summers), and I still use the saying from the first year the ropes course was opened, "Nothing is impossible, only challenging." My wife and I just had our first child (a girl) four months ago, and I hope that in a few years she'll be able to enjoy the experience of camp at Rocky River Ranch.
David "PACO" Mervish | Camp years: 1995-96

Rocky River Ranch, and the influences of people like Skeet, Sandy and Rue, have shaped the person that I have become today. I thank God for the love they showed me even in my most trying years when camp was more an escape than a retreat.
Sandy, who made sure that I never fell off a horse without a fight, just passed away and I want to be the first to say that I hope she is riding like the wind through the clouds, finally free of her disease. Thank you to all of the campers and counselors at Rocky River for truly, truly caring for those that are lucky enough to find their way into those hills...
(See you all at the Memorial on the 12th...)
Alexis Souza Schooley | Camp years: 1987-89

I had a dream last night where I was back at RRR, and everything was so vivid--I remembered exactly where every cabin and path was. I woke up with my mind full of memories. So I got online this morning and found this site.
I crazy-loved my time at RRR. So many fantastic memories with Laura Mafridge, Sandy Harris, Emily Davenport (my little sis--remember the time we shaved your legs for the first time, Em?), Rhonda, Sunny Becker, Shawn Beech, Kat Newberry. The people I met at RRR were all so amazing, and the time I spent there changed me (for the better).
Glad to see the camp is still thriving and making a difference for a whole new set of girls. Oh and...COWPOKES RULE!!!!
Kathy White

I was a camper at RRR from 1975-1987. It was a HUGE part of my childhood & I cherish all of the wonderful memories I have. Sandy, Skeet, Jim, Rue, Arthur Ya'll were the best extended family a kid could ever ask for. Bar K holds fond memories as well. The stories I have would take days to repeat and the friendships I made were oh so REAL! I look forward to one day seeing everyone again. You all at camp have left a true legacy and I pray God blesses you. You will FOREVER be in my heart.
Kathy Hotz Thompson | Camp years: 1975-87

I only went to camp once as a child, and I am so happy that the camp I went to was Rocky River Ranch. I enjoyed every moment I spent there (most of my time was spent at the stables with Poco the wonder horse). I hope to someday send my children to Rocky River Ranch, so that I can share this wonderful experience with them.
Liza Sciallis | Camp year: 1985

Some of my most happiest memories were of the carefree days I spent at Rocky River Ranch. I had ridden horses all my life but it was there I learned every name for the parts of the bridle and saddle (and finally aced the test!).
I loved Free Swim in the Blanco but I enjoyed Synchronized Swimming just as much. I remember "Godspell" like it was yesterday and how EVERYONE got into the spirit of the production and all its songs. I remember a horse named Copper who was "mine" - at least he felt like he was mine. I thought the Canteen was so special-- the daily ice cream--where I usually got a Drumstick - or hopefully, a Care Package.
Oh, those days gone by...
Christina "Ceecy" Gunn Robinson

I miss camp! They should make a Rocky River for grown ups. Great memories... when I have a little girl I'll send her to share in the same great experiences. RRR taught me to work hard, play harder and keep great friends close... and I learned to shave my legs in Bar K's bathroom!
Tiffany Carson Sims | Camp years: 1983-92

From my first summer as a camper in Circle B Down to my last summer (13 years later) as a counselor in Western Empress, Rocky River Ranch provided me with unforgetable experiences and lasting memories. At 22, mail call is still the most celebrated part of my day. In college I followed the RRR example and gave myself rest period each day. Thank you for all of the memories and all of the magic. I'm going back to school for 3 more years, and I can't think of a better way to spend my summers than at RRR.
Meg Lowery | Camp years: 1988-2000

I would love to hear from old camping buddies.....especially Sunny Becker....have been looking for some of you guys. I live in New Braunfels now. My grandmother, Frieda, worked at the camp and may help you remember me if you were there during that period of time.
Stephanie ("Squish") Shupp Wilson | Camp years: 1982-84

I miss Rocky River! I abandoned ship this summer for the first time in 10 years. It felt weird not to be at RRR. So much of my life has been shaped by experiences and people there... GO COWPOKES!! I miss everyone that I didn't get to see this summer, and I miss everyone else that I haven't seen in forever!! If any of you are at UT look me up so we can hang out! See you guys soon!
